How the comparison works
Big Mac price = your US price × (local Big Mac in dollars ÷ US Big Mac in dollars), in the currency Steam charges there. When Steam charges the local currency, exchange rates cancel out: it is simply your price × local Big Mac price ÷ US Big Mac price. Prices are rounded to Steam-style endings (19.49, 19.99; whole units for yen, won and similar).
Valve price is Valve's own recommendation for the nearest US tier, scaled to your exact price the same way Valve's explorer does it. A ratio above 1 means Valve asks more than local burger prices suggest.
Why Japan stands out: in dollars, a Big Mac in Japan costs about half what it does in the US, one of the lowest prices in the survey, while Valve's yen price is much closer to the US price. At $19.99 the ratio is 1.74×. To use a number from this page, open your package in Steamworks, choose Propose Pricing, and override the currency you want to change.

FAQ
Where do Valve's recommended regional prices come from?
Steamworks offers three optional conversion methods that turn one US dollar price into every currency Steam supports: exchange rate only, purchasing power only, and a multi-variable method that, in Valve's words, considers "local purchasing power, the expected cost of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rate". Valve publishes the resulting table in its public pricing explorer.
This page uses the explorer's default table — judging by its numbers, the multi-variable one — effective Oct 8, 2026. Valve does not disclose the inputs, and its own documentation says the suggestions are optional: many developers set every currency themselves.
Why are Argentina and Turkey priced in US dollars on Steam?
Since 20 November 2023 Steam charges customers in Argentina and Turkey in US dollars instead of pesos and lira. Valve's stated reason: exchange-rate volatility made it hard for developers to choose prices and keep them current, and kept breaking local payment methods. Argentina now sits in the LATAM USD pricing group and Turkey in MENA USD, each with a reduced dollar price.
A region group has one price for every country in it. Among the Big Mac economies, LATAM USD also covers Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela; MENA USD also covers Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Oman. So the table shows a per-country Big Mac view, but you can only set one number per group — which is why these countries are left out of the "biggest gaps" list.
How often are these prices updated?
We could not find a published update schedule from Valve. Each version of the explorer table carries an effective date; the one on this page starts Oct 8, 2026 and was fetched on Oct 15, 2026. We re-check it and print the date at the top of this page, so you always know how old the comparison is.
The Big Mac side is The Economist's survey, published twice a year. This page uses the July 2026 edition.
Is the Big Mac ratio a reliable way to price a game?
It is a cross-check, not an oracle. Its strength is that it is a real, identical product priced by local managers in local money, so it captures local costs without anyone's model in between. Its limits: it covers 54 economies, not every Steam market; a burger reflects local wages and rent more than what people spend on games; and some years are distorted — Argentina's recorded price barely moved from 2011 to 2014 while the peso lost half its value.
Use it to spot where Valve's suggestion is far from local purchasing power, then decide. The full reasoning is in the methodology.
How big a gap from Valve's price is worth changing?
Our rule of thumb, not Valve's: below about 20% either way, leave Valve's price alone — the Big Mac comparison is not precise enough to justify fiddling. This page highlights a country only when Valve's price is at least 1.2× the Big Mac price, or at most 1/1.2 of it.
Steam's own rules matter more than the exact threshold. Valve asks that prices stay unchanged for 30 days after release; proposed changes are reviewed, usually within one or two business days; and raising a price in any currency blocks discounts for 30 days. So batch your changes, and make increases well before a sale you want to join.
